SABINE PASS, TX – Five people died, four were critically injured, and several other suffered less serious injuries on Monday when a passenger van collided head-on with a charter bus near Sabine Pass.
12 News Now reports that that the fatal commercial vehicle accident happened in the 3000 block of South Gulfway Drive at about 3:50 p.m. on May 18.
Authorities say that a Chevrolet Express passenger van heading northwest crossed the center line of the road and hit the front of an oncoming charter bus operated by Hotard Coaches. An Audi traveling behind the bus also crashed into the wreck.
The van’s driver and three passengers died at the scene. Authorities identified the driver as Cesar Rojas, a 28-year-old resident of Baytown. The passengers were Osvaldo Alvarez, 37, Angel Dominguez, 28, , and Emmanuel Reynosa Rivas, 27.
A 22-year-old man who had been transported to Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont died later that night. Authorities have not released his identity.
Several other passengers of the van were also transported to various hospitals. At least one person was treated and released. We do not know the current conditions of other victims.
Emergency responders took the bus’s driver and one passenger to Medical Center of Southeast Texas in Port Arthur. Both were treated and released.
It took more than five hours for authorities to clear the area surrounding the wreck.
